| For a good look at the grandeur and opulence of the former
British empire, be sure to see Buckingham Palace and
the Houses of Parliament. To get a feel for the deep
religious roots of this mainly Protestant country, visit St.
Paul's Cathedral (where Princess Diana and Prince Charles were
married) and Westminister Abbey (where Princess Diana's
funeral was held). The theatre
district is famed for its artsy feel and world-renown playhouses.
Other important sites include: Big Ben, Picadilly Circus
and Hyde Park. Outside of London, the green countryside
is dotted with historical sites and castles and quaint towns.
Stonehenge is located just outside the charming town of Salisbury.
Oxford provides some typical English scenery with its
old stone buildings and schools. Farther north, Liverpool
and Manchester are home to Beatlemania
with museums, shops and restaurants all dedicated to the Fab
Four. Even further north, the Lake District
provides some excellent hiking
and biking opportunities. |
