| Just north of the capital, El Yunque,
offers an immense tropical forest with walking paths, waterfalls, orchids
and coqui frogs at its base. Off the east coast, Culebra and Vieques
Islands offer a quiet alternative to the main island and have fantastic
beaches, snorkeling
and scuba diving. The second biggest city in Puerto Rico,
Ponce, offers incredibly preserved plazas, fountains,
Colonial buildings and churches including the impressive Catedral
of Our Lady of Guadeloupe. The small town of San German,
reflects its Colonial past in its Mediterranean atmosphere. Nearby Boqueron
Beach, is one the best on the island and Phosphorescent
Bay glows at night. Inland, Rio Camuy Caves
are home to one of the largest subterranean rivers in the world. Ride
a tram
to Cueva Clara to view its amazing stalactites and stalagmites. Nearby,
Arecibo Observatory, is home to the largest radio telescope
in the world where the U.S. government monitors extra-terrestrial life,
made famous in the movie "Contact" with Jodie Foster. |
