Caribbean town from the waterPuerto Rico's capital city, San Juan, is the second oldest city in the Americas. The old town area offers some interesting dining and shopping in its wonderfully quaint, crumbling buildings and narrow cobblestone streets. Just east of the city, El Morro Fort, sits as a reminder of the tumultous past of the Caribbean islands.
Just north of the capital, El Yunque, offers an immense tropical forest with walking paths, waterfalls, orchids and coqui frogs at its base. Off the east coast, Culebra and Vieques Islands offer a quiet alternative to the main island and have fantastic beaches, snorkeling and scuba diving. The second biggest city in Puerto Rico, Ponce, offers incredibly preserved plazas, fountains, Colonial buildings and churches including the impressive Catedral of Our Lady of Guadeloupe. The small town of San German, reflects its Colonial past in its Mediterranean atmosphere. Nearby Boqueron Beach, is one the best on the island and Phosphorescent Bay glows at night. Inland, Rio Camuy Caves are home to one of the largest subterranean rivers in the world. Ride a tram to Cueva Clara to view its amazing stalactites and stalagmites. Nearby, Arecibo Observatory, is home to the largest radio telescope in the world where the U.S. government monitors extra-terrestrial life, made famous in the movie "Contact" with Jodie Foster.
