Caribbean town from the waterWith a total land area of almost 270 square miles, Barbados is composed of coral buildup on rock formations. This soft coral land mass gives way to water erosion creating such subterranean attractions as Harrison's Cave. The climate on this island averages about 83 degrees with a low of 69 degrees in the winter and 85 degrees with a low of 74 degrees in
the summer with a humidity level of almost 70% in the driest months. This warm, wet environment is the perfect climate for Barbados' diverse range of tropical foliage; however, most of the island's native forests were cleared for farming long ago. Andromeda Botanical Gardens and Welchman Hall Gully provide visitors excellent insight into what the island may have looked like before the settlers arrived.

Over 90% of the island's residents are of African decent with the remaining individuals mostly of British ancestory. With its long British influence, cricket and horse racing are popular pastimes and there is much English pomp and circumstance surrounding special events. However, African and Caribbean influences play a strong role in the arts, music and beliefs on the island. English is spoken throughout the country with a thick Bajan accent.
