| Barbados has plentiful agricultural and ranching operations,
allowing chefs to use locally harvested fresh ingredients in their innovative
dishes. Bajan food is heavliy influenced by its geographical postition
in the West Indies with regional foods like pepperpot and conkies. Due
to the longtime English influence on the island, British food is also
widely available as is a range of international cuisines including French,
Italian, Chinese and more. The signature item in Bajan cuisine is the
flying fish which is prepared in every way imaginable (Remember
the long list of shrimp dishes spouted off by Bubba in Forest Gump?
Well, change shrimp to flying fish and...well, you get the idea.) Flying fish are available frozen at the airport for departing passengers. Other unique souvenirs include ginger-beer syrup (tastes better than it sounds) and Cajun hot pepper sauce. There are many shops around the island selling local crafts and typical Caribbean wares. Locally produced, and internationally acclaimed, Mount Gay Rum makes a wonderful gift as well. |
